OUR STORY
I had just graduated from Southwestern University, and Kyra had recently graduated from the University of Texas. We were both out celebrating with friends in downtown Austin when I happened to run into her at the bar. She was surrounded by her guy friends, but I decided to go for it anyway and asked for her number—shooters shoot.
The next weekend, after a fun date walking around the trail at Lady Bird Lake, I felt like it was the right time to ask Kyra if she wanted to make things official. She said, "Yeah, maybe eventually," not realizing I meant right then and there. Later that evening, I got a call from her. She said, “I had no idea you meant now! Yes, I want to be your girlfriend!”
Over the next few years, Kyra and I lived in Austin, and we were fortunate enough to make many memories along the way. I loved Kyra more and more every day, and eventually, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. So, I decided to propose to her in her favorite place on earth—San Diego, California. I might've told a few too many people about my plans, but somehow the secret was kept safe, and we were able to have a beautiful celebration on the coast.
We went to a restaurant on the beach, but neither of us really ate much, too excited about what was coming next. After lunch, Kyra took off down the beach faster than Usain Bolt, and I quickly followed. When she reached the spot, I dropped down on one knee and asked her to be my wife. With the support of our families and friends, it turned into the most amazing moment of my life—well, at least until the day we say "I do" at the altar.
Luke's Version
Our story actually began years before we ever met. During a school trip to New York, my now bridesmaid Raquel (Raq) and I decided to break away from the group and get our fortunes told by a psychic. At the time, we just thought it would be a fun story to tell, so I asked about my future husband. The psychic told me he'd have strong ties to California, and that we’d cross paths throughout college, but wouldn’t officially meet until the timing was right.
Fast forward to when Luke and I finally met—I was celebrating my graduation from The University of Texas (Hook 'Em!), and the psychic’s prediction was the furthest thing from my mind. Two weeks later, Luke and I were walking around Lady Bird Lake when he asked me to be his girlfriend. Unfortunately, due to a miscommunication, I said no at first. But in my defense: 1) We ended up walking the trail until it was pitch black outside, and I was too busy fearing for my life to hear him right, and 2) Luke had asked, “What do you think about dating?” after just two weeks of knowing each other. Needless to say, that didn’t last long, and by the end of the night, we were officially dating.
As we started our relationship, I learned that Luke was from California and that we had several mutual friends. One of those friends, whose apartment Luke would often hang out in, actually shared a wall with me throughout college. We had even attended many of the same events, always just missing each other. I definitely owe that psychic an extra tip.
When it came time for Luke to propose, I (obviously) knew what was going on. I’m a bit of an FBI agent by trade… and I noticed all our friends and family were in San Diego on Find My Friends—nice try, guys. But what I didn’t expect was how beautiful and special every single moment of the proposal would be. Luke had planned every detail with such thoughtfulness, making sure I was at the heart of it all. It was more than I could have ever imagined, and I’m beyond excited to become his wife!
